UPDATE: Laria Named Glen Cove Superintendent

BOE announced that interim Superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria will remain with Glen Cove for next three school years.

UPDATE: Laria Named Glen Cove Superintendent

The Glen Cove Board of Education named Dr. Joseph A. Laria as the district's superintendent of schools for the next three school years.

The announcement was made during Monday night's BOE meeting at .

, as a replacement for Dr. Laurence Aronstein, who retired after serving five years as superintendent.

"I've accepted this assignment because I believe that this community and staff want to do what's best for the children and community," Laria said. "This district could be as good as or better than North Shore or Locust Valley."

As the district prepares for the first budget review – set for next Monday – Laria said that the schools have a two-fold responsibility: to do the right thing for the children and the tax payers.

"Anyone who breaches that, I will not hesitate to throw under the bus," Laria said. "People of this community send us the best they have."

BOE president Ida McQuair said that the decision to appoint Laria as superintendent will be "very beneficial to Glen Cove."

McQuair said that Laria will not require health insurance or a pension.

"I'm happy about the news on Dr. Laria," said resident Kathryn Casale. "Noting health care and pension will not be absorbed or affect the budget. It's stuff like that we need."
