Nick DiLeo, a longtime Glen Cove councilman, died Monday. He was 56.
DiLeo served on the Glen Cove City Council since 2006, and in November, when he was re-elected, ran on on the Democratic, Working Families and Glen Cove Voters ticket, according to Newsday. In addition, he wan an official at Glen Cove’s St. Rocco's Church.
Colleagues told Newsday that DiLeo died of an apparent heart attack.
News of DiLeo's passing prompted the Glen Cove City Council to cancel its meeting Tuesday as the "our city mourns the loss of our City Councilman," according to a press statement.
Those who knew DiLeo expressed sorrow at his sudden passing.
“We are all deeply saddened and our hearts are heavy with the untimely passing of Councilman Nicholas DiLeo,” said Mayor Reginald A. Spinello. “Glen Cove has lost a good friend, a great leader and one of its favorite sons. As we remember our beloved Councilman, Nicholas DiLeo, Glen Cove flags fly at half-mast.”
The mayor described DiLeo as the “voice of calm and reason when dealing with the complex issues confronting our City.”
DiLeo is also remembered as a family man.
“Nick always put family first,” Spinello said. “Before beginning any conversation, Nick would ask, ‘How’s the family?’ His family was the center of his universe and true source of pride and pleasure to him.”
He added, “Please keep Nick, his wife, Debbie, their children Nicholas and Danielle, and his granddaughters Emery and Lyla in your thoughts and prayers.”
