White Lotus Massage and Yoga is celebrating its one-year anniversary this week in Hauppauge.

Nesconset Chamber of Commerce joined White Lotus owner Carolyn Calvacca and her staff for a ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, Oct. 15 to mark the business's first year in Hauppauge.

"It's difficult opening a business in this economy, it's not an easy thing. There's a lot of scary moments," Calvacca said.

Located on Route 111, White Lotus offers a combination of yoga classes and therapeutic massages. Over the past year, it has expanded these services to include spiritual counseling and meditation classes.

"As a business, I give these people jobs and as a community we all help to do what's important," Calvacca said. "We are always out in the community. That is part of the essence of healing, we heal ourselves by what we give back.

One of the difficulties the business has faced is competing with large franchise chains also offering yoga classes. However, Calvacca said she's done her best to make a competitive price structure and hiring the highest qualified people she can find.

White Lotus is introducing a new class called "Peeling Back the Layers" to help people deal with emotional and physical pain or discomfort involving myofascial release.
