Epoch 5 Public Relations, widely recognized as one of the top public relations firms in the New York area, has once again earned the PR Campaign of the Year Award from the Public Relations Professionals of Long Island (PRPLI), an industry organization. Epoch 5 Vice President Kathleen Caputi captured the firm’s recognition for spearheading the “Journeys To School” campaign on behalf of Epoch 5 client, Veolia Transportation.
Ms. Caputi’s award-winning strategies and media outreach centered on the March 2013 inaugural opening at the United Nations Visitors Centre of “Journeys to School,” an international photography exhibition documenting the difficult and often treacherous paths to school taken by children around the world. A joint project of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Veolia TransDev, a leading international transportation company whose U.S. subsidiary is Veolia Transportation, and the French photographic agency Sipa, Epoch 5’s PR campaign for the opening required coordination of all stakeholders, invited dignitaries, issues of U.N. security, event management, and press outreach before, during and after the opening.
Katherine Heaviside, president of Epoch 5, noted that PRPLI is the region’s premier organization for public relations, marketing, and communications practitioners. “Kathleen’s recognition during PRPLI’s 24th Annual Awards is well-deserved and her leadership of the Epoch 5 team in executing this high profile campaign was strategic, creative, confident and well-organized -- qualities she brings to all her work for our clients.”
According to Ms. Caputi, a resident of Northport, NY, the many compelling stories captured in the exhibition’s images of students from around the globe, from Kenya to Japan to the U.S., resonated locally for the media with the story of Santiago Munoz, a 14-year-old high school student from Far Rockaway whose ‘journey to school’ was impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Epoch 5 arranged for coverage of his particular story for, among others, New York Post, Daily News, Newsday, WABC-TV, NY 1, NPR, WNYC/NY Times, FoxNews.com, NBC-TV and CBS-TV. His story not only garnered extensive media coverage, it drew the attention of the New York City Housing Authority to the family’s desperate housing situation. Arrangements were made for the family’s move to public housing in Brooklyn, mitigating Santiago Munoz’s long commute.
Epoch 5 was subsequently selected to publicize and consult on “Journeys to School” in Boston, which opened June 17, 2013.
“There are few public relations firms that would attract this type of opportunity and I am fortunate to be at Epoch 5 and backed by a team of experienced professionals,” said Ms. Caputi. “I am
also fortunate to have enjoyed the confidence of Veolia Transportation, a sponsor of this moving, inspirational exhibition.”
