CORONA, QUEENS — Six kids fell ill after a mysterious odor wafted through a Queens elementary school Friday morning.

An odor seeping out of a ventilation system sickened six children and prompted an evacuation at P.S. 143 Louis Armstrong in Corona just before 10 a.m. Friday, officials said. The odor came from an HVAC system on the school's roof, according to the FDNY.

Four kids went to a local hospital for monitoring but none have life-threatening injuries, spokespeople from the NYC Department of Education and FDNY said. Students have since returned to class, according to a spokesman for City Council Member Francisco Moya, who represents Corona.

"P.S. 143 evacuated this morning due to a strong odor in the building, and FDNY and EMS immediately responded," a spokeswoman for the Department of Education said. "The building has been cleared for re-entry and we will continue to closely monitor the school."

The HVAC system was shut down and will remain off while students are at the school, Moya's spokesman added.
