Fire ripped through a Kings Park home in the early morning hours on Tuesday.
The Kings Park Fire Department responded to a 1:49 a.m. call of a fire at a two-story home on Marvin Drive. The department arrived on the scene at approximately 1:50 a.m. and declared the fire under control by 2:30 a.m.
Jim Heuschneider, a former firefighter for Kings Park, who lives at the house and was home at the time of the fire, woke those who were in the house. All were able to get out safely.
Paula Sledge, Heuschneider's girlfriend said her boyfriend and his father, who was also a Kings Park firefighter, lost memorabilia they fear can't be replaced.
"They lost many of their department items like medals and awards," said Sledge in an email. "Jim was at 9/11 and lost all of his memorabilia."
Neighboring departments from Commack and Smithtown provided mutal aid.
According to fire officials, all occupants escaped without injury. The fire is under investigation by the Smithtown Fire Marshal.
