Courtney served as a commissioner in the department since 1988 and is currently the chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. Previously, Courtney served the department of chief’s office from 1980 to 1987, where he was chief of the department during the last two of those years, according to the fire department fall newsletter.

Courtney is also past president of the Nassau County Association of Fire Districts and was appointed by the governor to sit on the New York State Arson Board, where he served for 10 years to help strengthen laws to punish arsonists.

Courtney follows in the footsteps of his father Joseph, who was a charter member of the Levittown Fire Department and also served the district as a commissioner.
