City: Volunteers Needed to Plant Bulbs
The City of Long Beach has put out a call for volunteers to help plant flower bulbs for a spring bloom.

“Anyone who is interested in helping can meet at the Ice Arena at 9 a.m. on January 19th and 20th,” reads an announcement that was posted on the city’s website Monday morning.

The city will provide the bulbs and the site of the plantings, according to the announcement. City Council President Scott Mandel cited 30 parks throughout the city that are in need of planting.

“This is going to be a terrific project for our community, and we are looking forward to seeing many residents assisting in our recovery process this weekend,” Mandel said in a statement.

For more information about the volunteer project, email the city at sandyvolunteers@longbeachny.gov with the subject line "bulb planting.”

At last week’s City Council meeting, resident Eileen Hession praised the out-of-town volunteer groups that participated in recovery efforts in Long Beach after Hurricane Sandy and asked if more volunteers could be brought back to help with simpler tasks, such as cleaning up broken glass in the streets.
