A Long Beach Police officer was hospitalized after his cruiser collided with a car that ran a red light, according to Newsday.
Cops said the officer, who has not been identified, drove west through the intersection of Broadway and Edwards Boulevard when a Mercedes Benz blew a red light and slammed into him, said the report.
The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m., reports said.
Photos obtained by Patch show the LBPD vehicle, a Chevrolet truck, had sustained serious frontal damage.
The driver of the Mercedes, who was not identified, passed a sobriety test, said the report. He was reportedly on his way home from a party at the Allegria Hotel and was transporting at least three other people, none of whom were seriously injured.
The officer, who is " in his 20s and previously was with the NYPD," was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center with "broken legs, knee caps, and hands," said Newsday. A police spokesperson added that the officer was "lucky to be alive," said the report.
