Crimes Nearby: Man Robbed at Gunpoint, Teens Injure Cops in Fight

An East Rockaway man was robbed at gunpoint in his own garage on the morning of Dec. 28.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 10 a.m., a 76-year-old man was in the garage of his residence on Cail Drive when an unknown white male suspect entered the garage through an open door and displayed a handgun. The suspect removed an unknown amount of cash from the homeowner’s wallet and fled the scene on foot eastbound toward Emmet Avenue, police said. The suspect is described as having a beard and wearing a black hat with a brim, a black waist-length coat and light pants. No injuries were reported.

Two teens were arrested Saturday night after they allegedly fought with officers who were responding to a robbery call at their location, according to police.

At 9:50 p.m., officers saw Michael Davidson, 17, of Valley Stream, and a 16-year-old Cedarhurst resident, on Rugby Road in Cedarhurst, the location of a call for a larceny in progress. Davidson was allegedly “immediately belligerent” to the officers, police said, and he andthe 16-year-old  were “physically combative” when officers attempted to first restrain, then arrest them.

One officer sustained a fracture to his right hand and another officer sustained a laceration and sprain to his right knee during the incident. Both officers were taken to a local area hospital for treatment of their injuries.

During the investigation, officers found that Davidson was in possession of a wallet belonging to an employee of the Starbucks at 316 Rockaway Turnpike in Cedarhurst that was taken earlier in the day.

Davidson is charged with two counts of assault in the second degree and grand larceny in the fourth degree. The 16-year-old is charged with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration in the second degree. They were scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday.

A Far Rockaway man was arrested Wednesday night on multiple charges after a shoplifting incident in Lawrence, which ended with the defendant allegedly fleeing from police and assaulting multiple officers.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 6:31 p.m., Fourth Precinct police officers responded to the Radio Shack at 25301 Rockaway Turnpike to investigate a shoplifting incident.

As officers approached the defendant, Walter Howard, 30, to place him into custody, he struck one officer repeatedly about the face and head and threw him to the ground, police said. When another officer attempted to assist, the defendant fled and a foot pursuit ensued.

According to police, a second officer fell injuring his right hand during the pursuit. Officers pursued Howard to Rockaway Turnpike where they attempted to place him into custody. A struggle ensued and an officer injured his hand. Three officers were removed to a local hospital where they were treated and released.

Howard is charged with three counts of assault in the second degree, petit larceny and resisting arrest. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday.
