A Lynbrook High School student was one of four young people honored by Nassau County's CSEA Local 830 at its 19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon on earlier this month.

The event, designed to honor the life and times of Dr. King, as well as preserve his “dream” for future generations, was held Jan. 5 at the Coral House in Baldwin. Four $500 scholarships were presented to children of CSEA members. This year’s winners were Alejandra Sanchez, of Lynbrook High School, Niara Knight, of Roosevelt, who attends Nassau Community College, Bryan Lehman, of East Meadow High School, and Patricia Ann Chavez, of Hicksville, who attends St. Anthony’s High School.

Four other honorees were also recognized during the reception for their community service. They were Westbury High School Assistant Principal Marcia Crayton, Molloy College student Lance Tyler Mason, of Hempstead, community activist Brea Baker, of Freeport, and Deaconess Sheila Deans Elliott, of Baldwin Harbor. The keynote speaker was Administrative Law Judge Reginald Brantley, of Westbury.

More than 150 people attended the event, as well as several dignitaries including Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, and Nassau County Legislators Wayne Wink, Robert Troiano and Dave Denenberg. CSEA Nassau Local 830 President Jerry Laricchiuta was also in attendance.

The program included several musical selections, and raffles over the course of the afternoon.

CSEA Nassau Local 830 is Nassau County’s largest public service union with more than 9,000 members.  It is part of CSEA Long Island Region One with 55,000 members, and statewide CSEA led by President Danny Donohue with over 300,000 members.
