Malverne Dedicates New Turf Field

Malverne students, athletes, coaches and official join Saturday to dedicate new turf field at the high school.

"This is a dream come true," Malverne Schools Superintendent James Hunderfund told the crowd gathered at the high school's new turf field Saturday.

The artificial turf was installed over the past three months after the district received state approval for part of the $14.1 million bond residents passed last November.

"That bond issue produced what you see here today," Hunderfund said as he spoke from the freshly painted 50-yard of the field during halftime of the varsity football game versus Valley Stream North. He was joined by fellow district administrators, school board trustees, Town Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Malverne Deputy Mayor Joseph Hennessy, local coaches and members of the Malverne Educational and Fitness Foundation. Behind them stood the Pride of Malverne Marching Band, the high school's varsity cheerleaders, Malverne Wildcats football players and cheerleaders, Malverne Mohawks lacrosse players, and Our Lady of Lourdes C.Y.O. coaches and athletes.

They all cheered as Board President Danielle Hopkins cut an orange ribbon stretched across the field to symbolize its official dedication.

"This is the start of all the new facilities at the senior high school," Hunderfund added, gesturing to the practice fields, basketball and tennis courts, and new bleachers which were still under construction. (These will be dedicated in the spring.)

The second half of the bond, which addresses needed improvements at the district's two elementary schools - Maurice W. Downing Primary School and Davison Avenue Intermediate School - is expected to begin shortly as the board approved several contractors for the project at its September business meeting.
