Mother and 2 Sons Escape Fire Inside Lakeview Home

Lakeview and Rockville Centre firefighters tackle blaze Sunday afternoon.

A mother and two of her sons were able to flee their Lakeview home without sustaining any injuries after the two-story house caught fire Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters from , Rockville Centre and responded to the home on Dekoven Street, off of Lakeview Avenue, around 1:30 p.m. and found the left side of the home engulfed in flames. Lakeview and Rockville together put down the fire, while Malverne stood by at the scene in case a "fast team" was needed.

Lakeview Fire Chief Michael Koppel said the fire probably originated outside of the home, pointing to the singed grass on the neighbor's front lawn.

This theory was also voiced by one of the homeowners, who spoke to Patch as she stood across the street from the scorched house with her husband and children.

Her husband had been at work when the incident occurred, but she was home with two of her sons.

"We we believe it started around the side of the house, as smoke first," she said. "My son, Calvin, was lying down in his room and started seeing flames and yelled out, 'Mom, get out!' I got my coat, important papers and ran out with my sons."

No injuries were reported but the left side of the home appeared to have sustained significant damage. A car that had been parked in the driveway nearby, however, seemed to have been spared.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal will need to determine the specific cause of the fire.
