One Year Ago Today Hurricane Irene Touched Down

A look back at the tropical storm that barreled through Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook.

Do you remember what you were doing one year ago today?

Perhaps, your were dealing with a massive tree that had fallen on your property, maybe even your house

Or you were among the many local residents waiting, for what would become days, in the dark for the Long Island Power Authority to restore electricity to your home.

Then again, maybe you barely even had a chance to assess the damage to your own property because you were among the volunteers working in hurricane shelters  or the many , police, DPW workers and emergency responders called to  handle downed , and clean up of one of the worst tropical storms this area has seen in decades.

Hurricane Irene touched down on the shores of Long Island and barreled through Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook on Aug. 28, 2011, one year ago today.

To mark the anniversary of the powerful storm that few will forget, we've compiled our best coverage here of the night she made impact and the days following as residents in our three communities pulled together to recover.
