Sound Off: Are You Vacationing on Canceled Winter Break?

Hurricane Sandy cut days from the normally scheduled February break but will that stop your family's vacation plans?

Sound Off: Are You Vacationing on Canceled Winter Break?

The Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook school districts' normal five-day winter recess has been cut short this year so that students can make up the instructional time lost due to superstorm Sandy.

Classes will be session at Malverne schools on Feb. 19, 20 and 21, leaving students with only two vacation days next week, Monday and Friday. And students and staff of the West Hempstead and Lynbrook public schools will only have Presidents Day, Feb. 18, off.

"You are not going to get in any new instruction on these days ... If people have vacation plans, they are going," Barbara Keilty-Michaleski, a West Hempstead resident and retired teacher told the West Hempstead Board of Education shortly after it voted to take back the vacation days.

West Hempstead Trustee Vincent Trocchia responded, "Then, that's a crime. Parents need to realize a disaster occurred and certain things have to be met.“

For families who already made travel plans for the February break before their children's school calendars were changed, they have had to decide whether to skip the trip or pulll their kids out of class for a week.

Do you plan on taking the February vacation regardless of the school district's decision to resume classes? Tell us in the comment section below.
