Virginia Man Arrested For Burglary in Merrick
Donald Smith, 45, jumped into Merrick Bay to avoid arrest, police said.
According to police, authorities responded to a residential burglary alarm located on Clubhouse Road around 9:50 p.m.
Upon arrival police found a Chevy Cruze parked blocking a neighbor's driveway with the door open, interior lights on and with a large safe on the front seat. Officers then heard the sound of glass shattering coming from the rear of the residence.
Police then saw Donald Smith, 45, of Newport News, Va. run from behind the bushes and jump into Merrick Bay to avoid arrest. As Smith was exiting the water, he refused to comply with officers and began to struggle by flailing his arms and legs to prevent arrest, police said.
During a search, police found that Smith was in possession of the key that belonged to the Chevy Cruze, authorities said.
