Parents Start Online Petition To Urge MP BOE to Sign a Resolution Against High-Stake Testing

Residents start online petition in hopes of pushing MP BOE to sign resolution against high-stake testing.

Parents Start Online Petition To Urge MP BOE to Sign a Resolution Against High-Stake Testing
Krista Shattes, Miller Place resident, has started an online petition asking the Miller Place Board of Education to consider signing a resolution against high-stakes testing.

High stake testing can be used to determine if a diploma should be withheld, how well teacher is educating their students, and even if a student is college ready. These types of exams usually come with high consequences. Some parent's feel that these types of tests are putting too much pressure both the students and teachers taking away from important curriculum.

In an email Shattes said, "We are concerned about the direction our schools have taken. The states growing reliance on standardized testing is adversely affecting students across all spectrums and the morale of our teachers. These tests are taking time away from real teaching."

The board has been a little reluctant to sign any resolution mentioning at the last meeting that they are still in discussions about it, but have no plan in signing anything at this time.

Check out the petition  here.

Don't forget to attend the next board meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the high school.
