Five Issues Facing Mineola in 2012: Paul Pereira

On the eve of the 2012 village election, Patch asked Mineola Village Trustee and Deputy Mayor what he felt were the most critical issues facing the village in 2012. Pereira, a member of the New Line Party, is currently on the board. Here are his responses:

2012 Fiscal Budget

I will be looking to once again present, to the residents, a balanced budget that does not cut services significantly all while attempting to stay within the . Although we (which I believe was the responsible thing to do) I know that we will work hard to stay within the cap if at all possible.

Bruce Terrace Flood Mitigation

The residents of the Bruce Terrace area have had to live with unbearable conditions for long enough. I am glad that we are finally able to in a way that will keep those home dry for a long time to come. I certainly hope that we will be able to bring them , at least from the village, in this fiscal year.

It is my hope that both of these projects will "hit” this fiscal year (and maybe even this calendar year). The revenue will certainly come in at a time that we need it in order to address some possible major infrastructure concerns (the gazebo in , the at , athletic fields, etc.). We will continue to work with the developers to ensure that even in these economic times these projects get off the ground. The challenge will be to strike a balance whereby the developer is able to (and the bottom line) remain intact.

It is important that we continue with our as well as be prepared to face any emergencies that come our way. It is also important to be prepared to deal with issues that may arise with , , or any other major infrastructure concerns. Having a balanced budget, planning for the future, and having a are all integral parts of being prepared for an emergency.

Debt Management

Continuing with our debt management plan is a no brainer. We have managed to cut over one-third of the debt in less than 10 years which has enabled the village to receive more favorable bond ratings which in turn allows us to finance at a much more favorable rate. I want to continue that trend.
