See Which Books New Yorkers Checked Out of the Library Most in 2016

Manhattanites loved Ta-nehisi Coates' National Book Award winner "Between the World and Me" in 2016.

NEW YORK CITY, NY — The New York Public Library (NYPL) may offer nearly 320,000 books, but New Yorkers all buried their heads in similar reading material this year. The library system — which serves the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island — released a list of its top check outs of 2016 and winning big was mystery novels, celebrity memoirs, nonfiction and Harper Lee.

The most checked out book across the NYPL system in 2016 was Paula Hawkins' mystery "The Girl on the Train," which was later adapted into a movie, according to an NYPL press release. Rounding out the top five were Ta-nehisi Coates' National Book Award winner "Between the World and Me," Paul Klanithi's "When Breath Becomes Air," Harper Lee's posthumously published "Go Set a Watchman" and Mindy Kaling's "Why Not Me?"

"Our top check outs certainly reflect the varied tastes and interests of New Yorkers – a richness and diversity that makes New York City unique, and its communities special," Christopher Platt, NYPL’s chief branch library officer, said in a statement. "As an institution that promotes learning, discussion, debate, education, creative expression, and thought, we are so proud to see such a wide variety of titles being borrowed, and look forward to a new year full of reading."

Although it didn't crack the top five system-wide, James Patterson's "NYPD Red 4" — the fourth installment in a series about an elite NYPD squad — was the top check out in the Bronx and Staten Island.

The NYPL broke down its data by borough and even by which book was most popular at each of its branches.
