2nd Annual HSRC High School Local History Conference

2nd Annual HSRC High School Local History Conference
The Historical Society of Rockland County (HSRC) will host its second annual High School Local History Conference on March 11, 2014. The day-long gathering brings together high school history students, their advisers, and the social studies department chairs from high schools throughout Rockland County. Participating high schools include Albertus Magnus, Clarkstown North, Clarkstown South, Nanuet, North Rockland, Nyack, Pearl River, Ramapo, Spring Valley, Suffern, and Tappan Zee.

This year's keynote speaker, Dr. Travis Jackson, will highlight Rockland County's unique place in American Civil Rights history with a talk on “Hillburn: A Story of Tragedy and Triumph.” Attendees also will be addressed by County Historian Craig Long, County Executive Edwin Day, District Attorney Tom Zugibe, County Clerk Paul Piperato, and State Senator David Carlucci.

In addition to hearing addresses from historians and dignitaries, the students will prepare short presentations for their peers about historic places in their towns or villages. The HSRC will provide ideas to the students about community service opportunities in the various geographic areas of Rockland that relate to history.  Municipal historians, town supervisors, and history-related organizations have been invited to suggest community service opportunities.

The co-chairs of the annual High School Local History Conference are Larry Singer, Esq., and Judge William Sherwood, Trustees of the HSRC; Kevin Metcalf, social studies coordinator at North Rockland High School; and Steve Shepardson, adviser to NRHS's Social Studies Honor Society. The 2014 conference is sponsored by Orange & Rockland Utilities, Comfort Inn & Suites of Nanuet, the Sheridan Family, and the Trustees of the Historical Society of Rockland County.

Please note that attendance at the conference is by invitation only. Sponsorship opportunities are available by contacting the HSRC at (845) 634-6929.
