While some town clerks’ offices in New York are opening Sunday so same sex couples can start on their marriage application paperwork the day the Marriage Equality Act takes effect, Clarktown’s will not be open.

Town Clerk Justin Sweet said he has had just five or six inquiries since the marriage equality bill was signed into law a month ago. He had anticipated many more calls than he or his staff has received.

Sweet does expect some couples will visit the office on July 25.

“I believe that I have two couples that said they were going to come in Monday morning,” he said. “I have a feeling that we will get a couple of people on Monday morning.”

s’ offices had been waiting for updated paperwork from the state health department - certificate of marriage, transcript of marriage and marriage license – and guidelines. The health department changed the designations on the forms from bride/groom to bride/groom/spouse.

Sweet is the town's official marriage officer and performs civil wedding ceremonies. Regular office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
