Ailing Heat or Cooling System? Call the Doctor

Every local business has a story worth sharing with the community.

Our spotlight today is on Jay Fogel.

Business: Air Medic Inc
Owners: Jay Fogel

Address: 1540 Rte. 202, Pomona, NY 10970

How did you come up with the name?
Years ago, when I worked for another company, I used to do service calls for a commercial building and in the office people who worked there saw me walking in with my red tool box and said, "Here Comes The Doctor." So that's how I came up with the name Air Medic.

Why choose that location? Why start a business in this town?
It's centrally located in Rockland County and we can serve all towns in the county.

Briefly, what business are you in?
HVAC

What's the most difficult moment or challenge you've faced as a business owner?
An overwhelming number of new companies in the same business as ours have opened in the last few years. We have been in business in Rockland for over 32 years, and we now have to compete with these new HVAC companies. There should be a cap on new licenses for this area.

Were there any challenges that made you second guess your decision to be an entrepreneur?
Sometimes competitors give low ball quotes but they don't do the quality work that we do. So, unfortunately, we lose some of those jobs.

What's been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?
We've been servicing Back to Earth in New City for over 20 years. We also service Blu Fig and the Burger Loft as well as New City Condos and numerous private homes in New City. We are proud to serve our customers well in this area.

What's the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?
The design of our trucks is unique with its innovative lettering -- flames on the top and ice on the bottom of the letters, with colors of red, blue, yellow and white against a background color of black. This idea stands out above the crowd.

How do you deal with difficult customers?
I listen to their concerns and work it out amicably, which makes them happy and satisfied without an argument.

How does your business give back or get involved in the community?
We do our shopping and eat at numerous restaurants to support the local businesses in New City.

The plan behind this series at Patch is to shine the spotlight on all our favorite local businesses, and to learn a little about the ones we may not know that well.

This is as much about supporting local businesses as it is about celebrating the places and faces that make our community special.

Here's  a simple form where local business owners can answer a few quick questions to be part of this ongoing feature.
