New City Library Trustee Applications Being Accepted

The New City Library is accepting applications from people interested in running for the Board of Trustees, which has three seats up for election in December. Applications can be submitted for the three-year terms until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The notice was posted on the library website on August 31.

Board Trustees Terri Thal and Edward Kallen have not yet decided if they will run for re-election. Thal has served as a board member for almost 10 years, though not in consecutive terms. Edward Kallen is completing the one-year remaining in the term of , who resigned in 2011.  Kallen was appointed to the vacancy.

“I have made no decision yet,” said Kallen. “I’m probably going to make it in the next week or two.”

The seat of Aney Paul, who resigned in August, is also up for election. Paul had been serving her second term on the board. She was elected to the Rockland County Legislature last November. Efforts to appoint a replacement to complete Paul’s term were tabled at the board's August meeting.

Interim Library Executive Director Marianne Silver said the board’s bylaws require a three weeks period for trustee application submissions. She said if someone does not meet the September 19 deadline, they could still be onthe December ballot. Prospective candidates could submit a petition in November with the signatures of 20 New City Library cardholders.

The elections for the trustee seats and vote on the library’s budget will take place in mid December. The three trustee terms end on December 20.

The board holds its next regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20
