For one New City storeowner, provided a boost.  The program promoted by American Express encouraged shoppers to visit their local stores.

“It worked out well,” said Roberta Staley, co-owner of Pet Palace in the Clarkstown Plaza.  “It was really amazing.  I think it did help bring people to the community.”

Staley said the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving were busy. Compared to 2010, she said the first weekend of holiday buying was “a touch better” and she was encouraged by the sales.

Other merchants reported a good start to the shopping season.

“Friday, Saturday and Sunday was crazy busy,” said Steve Weissblatt, president of the New City Chamber of Commerce. “All in all, the holiday season started out great.  I think we’re off to a great start.”

American Express offered cardholders a $25 statement credit if they used a registered card to make a purchase of $25 or more at a participating merchant on Saturday.  Staley said it would be beneficial if the program ran more than once a year.
