Visiting Hours Continue May 13 for John Higgins
John was born in Greenwich Village, NYC on August 21, 1928 to John and Catherine (Honan) Higgins. John was a retired New York City Police Inspector who served the people of the City of NY for 38 years. His unmistakable character, integrity and compassion earned him the admiration of all who knew him.
John proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and joined the NYPD upon receiving his honorable discharge from the Army.
He attended Fordham University while working and attained his MBA alongside his son, John.
John married the love of his life, Jean (Minichini) and together for 60 years of marriage, they raised their 4 children. John loved to golf, watch his Yankees & Giants and was an avid reader. He cherished family gatherings and time with his grandchildren. John will be remembered as a kind and generous person who always recognized the goodness in anyone he met. He will be truly missed by all.
John is survived by his beloved wife Jean, his children John (Camille), Mary Auten (Melvin), Michael (Gail) and his grandchildren Lisa, John, Joy, James, David, Christopher, Matthew, Andrew, Michael and Caroline. John's son, James (Anne Marie), and granddaughter, Kelly Higgins, predeceased him.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 13th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 14th, 10 am, at St. Augustine's Church, New City, NY. He will be laid to rest at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Nanuet, NY. Memorial contributions can be made in John Higgins name to the American Diabetes Association or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
