Two firetrucks were damaged trying to reach the home, which was located deep in the woods.
SOUTHOLD, NY — Firefighters rushed to the scene of a home in Southold fully engulfed in flames in the pre-dawn hours Saturday.
Thick smoke billowed from the residence in darkness as Southold firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze.
Although no one was believed to be home, two firetrucks were damaged trying to reach the home, which was located deep in the woods, at 1800 Hyatt Road, off Hortons Lane near the Long Island Sound.

According to Southold Fire Department Chief Engineer James Rich, firefighters were initially called to a house nearby for a carbon monoxide call at approximately 5:30 a.m. Although firefighters could find no issue at the first home, the power there went out, and when Rich stepped outside, he looked "at the stars" and saw the glow of the flames, which were sweeping through the home nearby.
"We found it fully engulfed," Rich said.

The home was located so far back in the woods that two firetrucks were damaged trying to reach the scene on the narrow roads.
"Thankfully, no one was hurt," Rich said.
Greenport and Cutchogue fire departments were also both at the scene.
According to a real estate listing, the property sold in February for $1.35 million.
