Retired Police Officer, Bayman Dies In Snow

A familiar face in Southold was lost in the aftermath of Friday's fierce storm.

Fred Fiedler, 73, a retired Southold Town police officer, died on Saturday morning while out in the snow.

According to family friend Cynthia Perillo, Fiedler was outside his Southold home in his truck, running the truck back and forth while trying to forge a path in the snow, when he suffered a massive heart attack. Fiedler, she said, had existing health problems.

Perillo commended the response time of the ambulance that came with a town plow in tow; help was on the scene immediately, despite the heavy snow accumulation, she said.

Fiedler leaves behind his wife Melanie and sons David and Brian. A retired Southold Town police officer, he was also an active member of the Southold Baymen's Association.

The Suffolk Times featured Fiedler, along with other members of the Southold Baymen's Association, in an article in September of 2010 on their efforts to restore the local clam population.

"I'll never live to see these clams grow up," Fiedler told the paper.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

On Saturday, Greenport Mayor David Nyce warned residents to take care, as the snow posed hazards. He said that some calls for heart attack victims had come in after individuals had been shoveling.
