Still Need Your Drive Plowed? Don’t Ask the Town

For the first time after a snow storm, Southold Highway super says he’s getting requests to plow private driveways.

Still Need Your Drive Plowed? Don’t Ask the Town

Southold Town Highway Superintendent Peter Harris told the Southold Town Board at Tuesday night’s meeting that for the first time in his tenure on the job, he’s getting a lot of calls from people requesting that town plow drivers clear their driveways after winter storm Nemo.

Though Harris said he understood, he said the town simply can’t help legally.

“I understand the frustration — we did push snow into private driveways as we were clearing the roads — but we’re not in the business of clearing out driveways,” he said. “If we go onto private property and destroy something, you’re going to want to sue the Town. I’m sorry that’s the way it is.”

Harris added that he thanked everyone who has shown appreciation for his crew, who are still pulling long hours to clean up the North Fork — before it snows yet again before Valentine’s Day.

“We’re doing everything physically possible to get back to normal as quickly as possible,” he said.

Do you still need your driveway plowed? Let us know in the comments below — and perhaps a private plow driver will notice and help you.
