Supervisor Reacts to Suffolk County National Bank Shutting Doors in Mattituck

The supervisor said he hopes local residents employed at the branch will still retain their jobs.

Supervisor Reacts to Suffolk County National Bank Shutting Doors in Mattituck
After learning that the Suffolk County National Bank branch in Mattituck was slated to shut its doors in the coming months, Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell expressed his thoughts on the closure.

"It is unfortunate. The bank has employed many local residents over the years and it is my sincere hope that the parent company find room for them at other branches," he said.

According to a report in the Suffolk Times, the branch is slated to close by March; the bank is located just east of the Mattituck shopping plaza and is well known for its large digital clock outside.

The news comes only days after more than 30 years, the  Water Mill branch of the Suffolk County National Bank closed on Oct. 4.

The small branch, complete with a drive-thru, was located on the corner of Montauk Highway and Nowedonah Avenue, just east of the hamlet center. It was the only bank in Water Mill.

Frank Filipo, the executive vice president at Suffolk County National Bank, said the decision to close the Water Mill branch, along with a branch in Middle Island, was announced three months ago after "an overall efficiency study" was completed.

Asked if employees at the branch would lose their jobs, he said, "Most of the people in the Water Mill branch are being relocated within the company," he said.

The bank owns the building, which is up for sale.

There are  27 other branches of the Suffolk County National Bank. Nearby branches are located in Southampton, Sag Harbor, and two locations in East Hampton.
