Car v Bicycle: Nyack Road Rage Detailed on the Internet
Have your say.
"On Sunday I was riding my bike between Nyack NY and Piermont NY on Route 9W a*****used extensively by bike riders in the NYC area. I was riding in the right lane just a few feet away from the edge of the road going 18 MPH in a 25 MPH zone when a car came up behind me and the driver laid on his horn. I had nowhere to move over so I kept on riding and the driver kept laying on his horn. After a bit the car pulled up alongside me and a woman was leaning out her window screaming "get off my road." The car was maybe a half inch from hitting my bike. I told her to go f*** herself and the driver then cut me off and came out of the car on the driver side. It happened to be a teenage girl so no fists were thrown. The car drove off but I was quite shaken and feel something needs to be done about this kind of aggressive behavior against bike riders. I have the license plate number of the car. May I bring criminal or civil charges against the operator of the car?"
The lawyer who answered the post suggested calling the police.
In the United States there's an "extreme systemic prejudice by drivers against cyclists" posited the Economist last fall after an opinion piece "Is it OK to Kill Cyclists?" appeared in the New York Times.
