Bus Monitor Sues Ossining Schools, Blaming Hostility to Spanish Language
Gloria Stella Jaramillo is accusing the Ossining Union Free School District and a private bus company of firing her because she spoke Spanish to the students.

A Hispanic woman is suing the and a private bus company, accusing them of firing her from her job as a bus monitor because she spoke Spanish to the students.
According to The Journal News, Gloria Stella Jaramillo was terminated from her job in September of 2009 by both the school district and Baumann & Sons Bus Company of Long Island.
The federal discrimination suit was filed by Jaramillo and her husband, Carlos Sanchez, who was also employed by the school district and Baumann , but left his position in October of that year, arguing he was subject to an antagonistic work environment.

Officials with the Ossining school district did not return repeated calls for comment Friday.
Earlier this month, a federal judge with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, denied the defendants’ attempts to dismiss the suit, said their attorney Erica Kagan of the Manhattan-based civil rights firm, The Kurland Group.

Sal Rashid, a corporate risk manager for Baumann, said they would never terminate someone for speaking Spanish, but declined to comment specifically on Jaramillo and Sanchez’s suit.
The suit seeks to recover loss of wages, career advancement and promotional opportunities though a figure has not yet been determined, Kagan said.
