
The Colonel Josiah Smith Chapter NSDAR unveiled its newly restored, 92-year-old charter at the 2012 Annual Luncheon Honoring State Regent Denise Doring VanBuren on Saturday, June 2nd, 2012, at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip.
In 2011, chapter members Betty Henken, Barbara Meszaros and Kristine Smith began seeing to the restoration of the framed document, which deteriorated over the years due to exposure to light and moisture. The charter bears the names of the 38 women who started the Patchogue-based chapter in 1920.
Founded in 1890, The Daughters of the American Revolution is a lineage organization dedicated to volunteer service, educational enhancement and historic preservation. Any female over eighteen years of age who can prove blood descent from an individual who aided in the quest to obtain American Independence is eligible to join.
