, located at 20 Terry Street, held its  last summer with the goal of attracting artists to Patchogue Village. This series introduces you to some of the talented faces behind its doors.

Linda Beckerman

Hometown: New York City

Patch: What is your art, and how long have you been doing it?

Beckerman: I mainly work in oils, pastels, and watercolors. But I’ve also made tapestries, illustrated books, and I’ve been a scene painter for musical theater productions. I first found my niche in the art world as an illustrator and Art Editor of the Flushing High School yearbook. I later received my B.A. in art from Queens College and an M.F.A. in painting from Rochester Institute of Technology. After moving to Manhattan where I met my neighbor, , a songwriter who became my future husband and artistic collaborator, I continued to paint while raising our three children.

Patch: What drew you to Artspace?

Beckerman: We lived in Stony Brook for 21 years, but after our children were grown and we needed to downsize, Artspace Patchogue came into our lives at just the right time. It’s an incredible opportunity for artists of all disciplines to live and work in the same building.

Patch: What benefits have you found by living in an artist community?

Beckerman: At Artspace, it’s great to have neighbors who share the same interests. We have a special camaraderie and being surrounded by so much talent inspires me to do more. Also, our exhibition gallery in the lobby provides us with a ready-made space where we can reach out to the community and show our work.

PatchWhat is your favorite aspect of living in the Patchogue area?

Beckerman: While we love New York City, we also love Long Island. And now we have the best of both worlds. We can walk to stores, restaurants, the , and the , and we can take a short ride down to the water. We can go downstairs to meetings in our lobby or at the Patchogue Arts Council, and we can see a movie next door at . The art scene is thriving and we are very excited to see the continuing revitalization of Main Street.

Patch: What are your future goals?

Beckerman: Living in this arts community has given me the inspiration to explore new directions in my art. While I’m not yet sure which way I’ll be headed, it’s exciting to see this new journey unfold.

Patch: Where can people see more of your work?

Beckerman: I’m currently showing at the Patchogue Arts Council’s Members Exhibition, Brookhaven Town Hall, as well as the gallery space at Artspace. And my work will be included in the upcoming “” show at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts on March 11 (project director: Howard Beckerman).
