Pearl River High School Celebrates 105th Graduation

Inclement weather and threatening skies may have moved the 105th Pearl River High School graduation indoors, but it failed to dampen the enthusiasm of all those in attendance.

“I would love it to be outside but at the end of the day the kids will get the accolades that they so richly deserve, so what difference does it really make?” said Pearl River Principal William Furdon.

In his opening remarks, Furdon spoke about the exceptional accomplishments of the class of 2011 and called them “one of the finest classes” with which he had been associated. He told of the great pride that he took in their achievements and made special mention of the 25,000 hours of community service that the graduates had volunteered in their years at Pearl River. He added the advice “be the best you can.”

Furdon also congratulated Superintendent Dr. Frank Auriemma, who is retiring after 41 years, 24 of which have been spent in the Pearl River School District.

Class valedictorian Craig Coyle suggested some of the attributes that his fellow graduates would need to be successful in the coming years. These included persistence, waking up early to get to work on time, handling the spotlight that their various talents might very well bring, surviving on their own and remembering the skill of working together.

Coyle, who will be going to West Point in the fall, concluded by quoting from a speech delivered by Army General Douglas MacArthur to a class of West Point graduates. MacArthur said that life could be defined by three words, “duty, honor and country.” Coyle said that the class of 2011 had fulfilled these obligations to themselves, their school and their community.

Class president Kimberly O’Toole spoke of the great camaraderie of her classmates and their many accomplishments on the playing fields and in the classroom. She referred to them as the “pioneers,” whose girls lacrosse team earned their first trip to the state tournament, whose football team ahd secured a much-cherished victory over Nanuet for the first time in 14 years and who will be sending two members of the same graduating class to West Point for the first time.

O’Toole urged her fellow graduates to, “accomplish all of the remarkable things I know that you are capable of” and asked them to heed the words of Thomas Edison when he said, “If we did all the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astonish ourselves.”

It only remained for the diplomas to be awarded to this Pearl River High School graduating class, which then marched out of the gymnasium as a group for the final time.
