Pearl River Sports: Girls Basketball Battles Albertus

The Pearl River will play Albertus Magnus in a meeting of two of the county's top girls basketball teams today at Pearl River.

When the Pearl River girls basketball team faced Albertus Magnus the first time this season,.

The teams play again 4 p.m. today at Pearl River in a matchup of two of the top teams in Section 1 Class A.

Pearl River (12-2) enters the contest ranked No. 18 in the state in Class A by the New York State Sportswriters. According to MSG Varsity, the Pearl River is in a tight battle with Sleepy Hollow (15-1) for the top seed in the Section 1 tournament. That same ranking has Albertus Magnus (8-6) tied for fifth, so today's game should be significant for playoff seedings.

Albertus Magnus looked like a favorite in Class A when the Falcons' season ended with a loss to Pearl River in the section semifinals last season, but injuries have taken a toll. Standout guard Kelly Guarino tore the ACL in her knee in July and was lost for the season. Division I recruit Maeve Parahus and guard/forward Ryan Doherty both have missed time, though they played and each scored 19 points in the first game against Pearl River.

The Pirates are undefeated in Rockland County, with their only losses coming to three-time state Class B champion Irvington and defending Section 4 Class B champ Oneonta.

The two schools will also play in boys basketball today, with Pearl River (9-5) at Albertus Magnus at 5:30 p.m.

Local Colleges Meet

Dominican College will play host to Nyack College in a women's and men's basketball doubleheader today.

The women's game starts at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.

The Nyack College women's team (0-18) enters today's game looking for its first victory. Dominican is currently third in the CACC at 9-3, 12-7 overall.

The Dominican College men (17-3, 11-1) take a four-game winning streak into today's game. Nyack is last in the CACC at 3-15, 1-10.
