Rockland County Extends Gas Limit

Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef announced Thursday that he is extending the local emergency order limiting gasoline sales to 10 gallons per vehicle per day.

The order, which has been in place since Nov. 2, includes portable fuel containers, but not wholesale deliveries to gas station retailers, emergency vehicles and commercial businesses.

"Faced with a difficult decision during the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, my administration felt it prudent to limit the intake of gasoline to help Rockland get through the fuel crisis that emerged following this horrific storm," Vanderhoef said through a press release. "While the fule crisis appears to be starting to turn the corner, state and federal officials indicated to me that additional time is needed to restore infrastructure and gas supplies."

Vanderhoef added that the state of emergency remains in effect for Rockland County.

County Shelter Closes

He announced that the county shelter in the Rockland Community College field house was closing Thursday night.

"We were able to find transitional housing for all of the remaining residents who were staying at the shelter," Vanderhoef said. "We would like to thank all of the county workers who provided a safe shelter for our residents during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Special thanks to the Red Cross as well for their assistance in running the shelter."
