Rockland Community College and Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester) will team up to hold the second annual Senior Fair Thursday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in RCC's Eugene Levy Fieldhouse.

"Senior citizens are an important segment of our community and RCC is committed to meeting their needs and interests," said Rockland Community College President Dr. Cliff L. Wood. "We are happy to host this informative and important event to benefit seniors and their families."

The first Rockland Senior Fair was held in August 2012, drawing elderly residents to find more programs and services available to them. The event drew over 80 vendors in 2012, with more expected this  year. Some of those included are New City Library, Clarkstown Parks an Recreation, the Library Association of Rockland County, Nyack Hospital, A&T Healthcare, Meals on Wheels, RSVP of Rockland, Sunshine Homecare, Home Aids of Rockland and Genworth Financial Long Term Care Division. 

"We continue to work tirelessly to provide residents, particularly in suburban areas of the state, the chance to be better accustomed with a wealth of services and programs available to them to ensure a better quality of life," Carlucci said. "Wheter it is staying fit and eating well or being cognizant of their financial resources, a Senior Fair is a great way to gather all stakeholders in our community together to foster dialogue and get people more involved with their community."
One change is the addition of a "Speaker Series," with experts in various fields. The speakers set so far are:
  • 11 a.m. -- Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe will focus on teaching seniors how to protct themselves from fraud and illegal scams.
  • 12 p.m. -- Dr. Nunzio Pomara, M.D., psychiatrist at the Pearl Barlow Center for Memory Evaluation and Treatment will speak about he aging process. Pomara is a specialist in diagnosis and management of cognitive impairment that can come from age, ranging from simple memory loss to Alzheimer's disease.
  • 1 p.m. -- Dr. Donald C. Goff, M.D., Director of the Nathan Kline Institute will focus on resarch, including the NKI-Rockland Sample. To read more about the ongoing research at the Nathan Kline Institute, read  this report on Patch.
