This information is from the Putnam Valley Sherriff's Department:

PUTNAM VALLEY, N.Y. – AUGUST 15, 2012:  Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that a woman was attacked and bitten by a dog in the Town of Putnam Valley this afternoon (Wednesday).  The victim, who is 54 years of age, was bitten when she tried to protect her pet dog from the attacking animal.

The incident occurred at about 1:50 P.M. today as the victim was walking with her leashed dog, described as a small mixed breed, along Lake Shore Road in the Roaring Brook area of Putnam Valley.  As they passed a residence, another dog, described as a mixed breed bull mastiff, came from the front yard of the home and attacked her pet.  The attacking dog was accompanied by four similar but smaller dogs, possibly its puppies.

The woman tried to intervene to protect her pet, whereupon the attacking dog reportedly bit her on the calf of her left leg.  The bite reportedly inflicted a deep wound.

Sheriff Deputies James Stasiak and Andrew Kristan responded to a 911 call reporting the incident.  The deputies secured the animals and summoned the Putnam Valley Ambulance Corps to aid the victim, who was taken by the ambulance to Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt for treatment of her injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Putnam Valley Animal Control Officer are continuing to investigate the matter.  No charges have yet been filed in connection with the incident.
