Underground Explosion Closes Route 202: UPDATE
significant damage underground with a massive debris field into the parking lot of Hudson Valley Hospital Center

CORTLANDT, NY — New York State police announced that Route 202 was closed Saturday night for emergency utility work. The announcement came at 10:30 p.m.
The closure was between Hudson Valley Hospital Center and Conklin Avenue.
Residents reported a loud explosion at about that time.

What they heard was a transformer explosion underground that also damaged a gas main. It was so strong that:
A debris field was found across Rt 202 and throughout the front parking lot area and main entrance of the hospital. The explosion was powerful enough for both manhole covers to land approximately 100 feet away and to split one manhole cover into 2 pieces.
