The long-awaited parking garage at the Hicksville train station is set to open Monday morning.

The new, state-of-the-art garage at the corner of Duffy Avenue and Newbridge Road will open at 5 a.m. to town residents with appropriate stickers. From there, it is a short-block's walk to the Long Island Rail Road's Hicksville station.

The price tag for the project that replaced the old structurally damaged garage is $36.4 million.

It will hold 1,440 vehicles on four levels, two levels below grade, one at grade level and one above ground. It's about the same size as the old facility that the town was forced to tear down in 2008 after the discovery of cracked support beams.

Supervisor John Venditto said many suggestions from town residents, including the new lower profile, were incorporated into the final design.

“I think commuters will find the bright, well-lighted facility, complete with an elevator, security cameras and emergency call boxes, very user-friendly...," Venditto said.

The parking garage is open only to town residents who have a Town of Oyster Bay commuter parking permit. Oyster Bay residents whose permit has expired, or do not have a permit, should contact the Town Clerk’s Office at (515) 624-6324. An application and instructions can be downloaded from the Town’s Web site, www.oysterbaytown.com.

The lot will be open from 5 a.m. to midnight weekdays. The entrance to the lot is on Duffy Avenue at the west end of the building. Commuters can exit onto Duffy Avenue both ways and onto Newbridge Road southbound.

While the lot was being built, commuters could park at the Broadway Mall and Sears and take shuttle buses to the LIRR station. The shuttle buses from those lots will be discontinued on Friday, April 1.
