Heavy Winds and Rains Expected into Thursday

Briarcliff Manor and Pleasantville residents should be aware of flooding, debris in the area.

Heavy Winds and Rains Expected into Thursday

"Mother Nature is throwing us another curve ball tonight and into tomorrow morning."

That's what Briarcliff Manor Village Manager Philip Zegarelli had to say about the heavy rain and winds expected to hit the area shortly.

"The latest weather advisory indicates that our region could receive between 1 and 3 inches of rain; sustained southerly winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts of up to 60 MPH; all lead off by a band of thunder storms that are targeted to hit around Midnight tonight," Zegarelli wrote in a memo to the community Wednesday.

Briarcliff Manor's DPW employees were focused on clearing gutters and catch basins today to help alleviate any flooding that occurs overnight into Thursday, he added.

Con Edison is also prepping for the worst.

"Extra crews will be available to respond to any power outages caused by strong winds," the company said in a statement today.

Con Ed will also be working with the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services in case storm responses are needed.

Zegarelli added that the below freezing temperatures the village experienced over the past week may make things worse tomorrow, pointing out some areas still have frozen ground which won't absorb runoff as usual.

"We expect that flooding could occur throughout the Village but especially along the Pocantico River drainage basin and other normally minor streams and brooks may become swollen by tonight's storm."

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning, flash flood watch and hazardous weather outlook in Pleasantville, Briarcliff Manor and the greater Westchester County area, as well as "gusts as high as 55 mph" tonight.

Tomorrow, the high winds may continue, with "gusts as high as 46 mph," with a chance of showers in the morning.

Con Edison is reachable at 800-752-6633 if you experience an outage or see downed electrical wires in the area.
