Port Chester Man Charged in Purdy Avenue Robbery

A 20-year-old Port Chester man is the second man to be charged in an August incident in which a New York City man was beaten and robbed as he was on his way to visit his girlfriend on Purdy Avenue, according to Port Chester police.

An investigation of the incident at 70 Purdy Ave. led to the arrest on Tuesday of Markel Calhoun of 70 Purdy Ave. on a charge of second-degree robbery, police said. Additional arrests are expected in the on-going investigation.

The 24-year-old victim told police that at about 2 a.m. on Aug. 28 he went to 70 Purdy Ave. to visit his girlfriend. He told police there was a group of young men in front of the building, so he decided to go to the rear of the building.

Police said that as the victim called to his girlfriend at the rear of the building, he was jumped by the men who had been in front of 70 Purdy Ave. Police said the victim was punched and kicked, and had his wallet, cash and a cell phone stolen.

The attackers ran away when the victim's girlfriend saw the robbery and screamed. The victim, whose clothing were torn in the attack, was taken to Greenwich Hospital for treatment of various injuries that ranged from a bloody nose to cuts and bruises.

Calhoun was being held Tuesday at Port Chester police headquarters for arraignment in Port Chester Village Court.
