Woman Stuck in Hole on Irving Avenue for 2 Hours

A 39-year-old Bronx woman visiting friends in Port Chester became trapped for two hours on Sunday morning when she stepped into a hole on Irving Avenue, according to Port Chester Police.

Emergency crews had to dig up a four-inch water pipe to free the woman, who was taken to Westchester County Medical Center for treatment of a leg injury when she was freed.

Police said the woman had been visiting friends when she walked to her car at Irving Avenue at Elmont Avenue at about 9:30 a.m. when she stepped into a hole in the street and got her leg caught in a water pipe. At first, police said they received a report of a person struck by a car, but when village officers arrived they found the woman sitting in the street with her leg caught in the hole up to her knee.

The woman was not struck by a car, police said.

Police said extrication tools had to be used to cut away asphalt and pieces of pipe to get the woman out of the hole.

In addition to police, the woman was assisted by Port Chester firefighters and Harrison EMS members. When she was freed from the hole, police said Port Chester DPW and United Water Co. crews were called to make repairs to the street.
