The Coastal Steward, a Port Jefferson based non-profit, recently blogged about its efforts to clean up area beaches, posting specific totals and types of debris picked up during the month of January.
Pat Kuchcicki wrote that 5.56 tons of debris was collected from the Port Jefferson side of Mt. Sinai harbor and Centennial Park beach during the month. Among the items found were shotgun shells, car parts and diapers.

"There were 99 volunteers from the local schools and girl scouts who came to help make a difference while earning community service credit," she wrote.
