We asked you to identify this photo of Port Jefferson Station taken in 1957.

Historical Photo Shows Aerial View of Routes 112 and 347

On Monday and asked for readers to guess where it was taken. Did you get the answer?

Back in 1957, this aerial photo was snapped by an unknown person showing the area centered around Routes 112 and 347. In the image, provided to Patch by the Cumsewogue Historical Society, a traffic circle that once was at the intersection in Port Jefferson Station is clearly visible.

"The oval outline of a former harness racing track is shown east of Canal Road," reads the description of the photo on the Port Jefferson historical archive. "During the late 19th century, this site was known as the Gentlemen’s Driving Park." A scan of a ticket to the Gentlemen’s Driving Park dated July 4, 1892 can be found here.

This photo comes from the archive of the Cumsewogue Historical Society and can be found on the Port Jefferson village website in the historical section. It is from the Port Jefferson Fire Department Collection.

If you are cleaning out the "junk" you've accumulated over the years and come across old photos, postcards, documents, brochures, letters, calendars or anything having to do with Terryville, Port Jefferson Station or Echo, consider donating them to the Cumsewogue Historical Society.

They are always looking for advertising items from local businesses whether they are long gone or still open. If you don't wish to part with your old photos, please consider allowing them to scan them for the archive. They will then be returned to you.

Please contact the Cumsewogue Historical Society at (631) 928-7622 or e-mail: cumsewoguehistory@yahoo.com for more information. All donations are tax deductible and you will be given a receipt for your donation.

The Cumsewogue Historical Society will meet next on Wednesday Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Terryville Union Hall on Terryville Road in Port Jefferson Station.
