Port Washington Schools will be closed Monday and several low-lying streets in the Village of Port Washington North are under an evacuation order as the massive Hurricane Sandy takes aim at the Eastern Seaboard.

On Sunday afternoon, Port Washington Schools announced that all classes will be cancelled on Monday.

The Village of Port Washington North announced that residents on Shore Road, Mill Pond Road, Harbor Road and Smull Place are included in the current Nassau County mandatory evacuation order.

The Village of Manorhaven reports that is now a mandatory evacuation for the entire village, and states that first responders recommend that before evaucuating, shut off all electric and gas to your home.

The Nassau County order is effective immediately. All residents are urged to secure all items outside their homes.

The Port Washington branch of the Long Island Rail Road will cease operations this evening as part of a larger shutdown of the entire MTA system.

Authorities are warning residents to prepare for possible loss of electric for a few days. LIPA asks you to report power outages to 1-800-490-0075.
