'Stretch' Ryder Honored at Coaches vs. Cancer Event

Port Washington boys basketball program announces the establishment of the "Stretch" Ryder Senior award in honor of the beloved community leader.

Remembered as a dedicated father of a player and a fan who exuded class and support for every Vikings coach and player, "Stretch" Ryder was honored at the annual Coaches vs. Cancer basketball game Thursday at Schreiber.

Ryder, active in the Port Washington community for many years,  died last year.

Speaking before tipoff of the fourth annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, Port Washington Head Coach Sean Dooley called Ryder's family members to center court for a dedication ceremony.

On hand was Ryder's family members, including Chris Ryder, who played three seasons at Schreiber before earning Divison III All-America honors at Hartwick College.

"It seems only yesterday 'Stretch' could be seen in the bleachers taking pictures," said Dooley. "No matter if we won by 10 or lost by 20, he offered his patented smile and firm handshake after the game."

Dooley said Ryder cared deeply for the boys basketball program and backed up his words with his actions.

Port Washington announced that from this year forward, it will present the Stretch Ryder Senior Award at their end of season dinner to the senior who demonstrates commitment and excellence to the boys basketball program.

"Stretch will always have a place with the program and your family will always have a place with us," said Dooley.
