Tell Us: Tax Assessment Errors

An appeals court has restored the County Guarantee for tax assessment errors. Who should pay?

Tell Us: Tax Assessment Errors

A state appeals court has given the responsibility to make good on tax assessment errors back to Nassau County.

Wednesday's decision overturned decision by a lower court that would have shifted the burden to school districts and local municipalities.

The so-called county guarantee has been a hot potato since the Nassau County legislature voted in 2010 to repeal it.

County officials have argued that they should not be held liable for assessments, noting that only one other county has to pay refunds.

But school districts and the Town of North Hempstead sued and argued that a shift will cause taxes to go up.

We want to know what you think. Should the county or the school districts pay off tax refunds on assessment errors?
