2 Rescued From Raging House Fire In Riverhead

Firefighters battled heavy smoke and heat at the Riverhead home, officials say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — Two people were rescued from a raging house fire in Riverhead Friday afternoon, police said.

The fire broke out at 4:52 p.m. at a home located on Doris Avenue, police said. First responders reported heavy smoke and fire engulfing the structure, police said.

One of the occupants was helped out of the house through the front door by a Riverhead police officer, authorities said. That resident reported that there was another man still inside. Police officers went to the back of the house and located him in a rear room, authorities said.

The officers tried to get the resident out through a window but were unsuccessful due to heavy smoke and heat conditions, police said.

Next, the Riverhead Fire Department arrived, and a Riverhead firefighter was able to enter the home through a window and guide the resident to the window, where he was pulled from the home by Riverhead police officers, authorities said.

Both residents were treated and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The Riverhead Fire Department extinguished the fire and the investigation was turned over to the Riverhead Town fire marshal, officials said.
