LI Man Dies After Car Bursts Into Flames During Crash: Police

The car went on fire when he crashed into trees, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead man died in a single car-crash after his vehicle burst into flames early Saturday, police said.

According to Riverhead Police, the crash took place just after 5 a.m. when Derek J. Cruz, 27, veered off the road and collided into trees on Osborn Avenue near Honey Lane. The Riverhead Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the flames, police said.

Cruz, the only person in the vehicle, was extricated and taken by the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center ,where he died, police said.
